Real Digital will possibly transform the way we use money in Brazil. But, despite that, Most Brazilians still know very little about the subject and its benefits. A survey carried out by TecBan and Datafolha showed that 82% of the population is unaware of the digital currency being developed by the Central Bank (BC).
Just 18% of people connected to the internet today know what Drex is all about. The survey was commissioned by TecBan and implemented by Datafolha recently. For the BC digital platforms manager, Luiz Fernando Ribeiro Lopes, the reality of data is controversial due to the strong interest of Brazilians in news and technologies.
1.500 people heard
Drex is yet another implementation in BC's innovation agenda after the launch of Pix and Open Finance. The digitized Real is a tokenized deposit that will focus on programmable asset transactions. In this way, the novelty is being developed on a DLT platform, working with the same technologies as blockchain networks.
Data from the survey “Relationship of Brazilians connected to the internet with financial services and ATMs” brought an analysis of habits in relation to payment methods and financial institutions. Listening 1.519 people from all social classes, the survey was carried out online between 25 September and 6 October.
It's still early days for Drex to become popular
Despite the numbers, the Central Bank has a positive vision for the scenario, believing that misinformation is fleeting. The Drex pilot project is still in the testing phase and will only be launched at the end of 2024. Until then, The expectation is that Brazilians will become more aware of digital currency and its advantages.
The testing phase of the new system includes other institutions and companies such as Itaú, Santander, Microsoft, AWS, BTG Portugal and TecBan itself. That's why, the population still does not have access to systems so that they can learn about and experience technology in a practical way.
“Just as happened with Open Finance, We still have many opportunities to teach people about the use cases of Real Digital and its implications in everyday life”, says Lopes. For that, the BC should explore the validation of topics such as security and privacy and scalability to break the barrier of ignorance.
