The use of robots for different purposes in industry and economy is already a reality. But, after the popularization of this type of product, Science is seeking to further improve existing models. A recent study is betting on the development of robots with muscles to increase efficiency and save resources.
The latest research shows that robotic muscles allow for even more applications. Nonetheless, technology that mimics human musculature already existed and these upgrades operate in a very similar way. Although, researchers discovered how to make the effects of this technology last longer, no longer a short-term solution.
With this mechanism, the machine's functionalities would be vastly superior, as well as energy consumption would be lower, something that would probably make the use of robots more accessible to the market. Now, the technology can be used in robotic projects in different areas at a much lower cost.
How robotic muscles work?
In reality, the so-called robotic muscles are actuators. These are devices that reproduce movements and force through electrical energy, hydraulic or other order. There are different models of actuators on the market, nonetheless, the softest materials suitable for this purpose are silent and biodegradable.
To make the effects of the actuator last longer, studies have shown that new types of materials must be added inside during manufacturing. Exemplifying, the actuators are made of plastic film, filled with oil and coated with conductive plastics. Like this, when they are energetically activated, the film displaces the fluid creating a contraction similar to human muscles.

Today's robots are already being used for a range of activities ranging from household chores to space missions.. Nonetheless, companies are committed to increasingly developing sustainable solutions for the improved use of technology.
Robotic muscles have been studied for a long time by Ion-Dan Sîrbui from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. The researcher had already started studying the topic at Johannes Kepler University, Linz, in Austria. Like this, an article about robot muscles was published in the journal Nature. Recently, the team worked on theoretical models and different tests to prove the efficiency of this project.
