Global sales of electric cars reached a new record in the second quarter of 2023. Marketing more than 1 million vehicles together, Tesla and BYD reinforced their leadership as the manufacturers that sell the most in this segment worldwide. The most expressive volume was achieved by BYD, Shenzen car company, China.
The brand delivered 700.244 vehicles including fully electric and hybrid models as well. Me and Tesla, by businessman Elon Musk, delivered 466.140 cars, exceeding market expectations. Analysts consulted by Boomerang estimated that the American leader, based in Austen, would deliver 448.350 cars in the last three months.
This is the highest sales record recorded per quarter by the manufacturer, representing an increase of 83% compared to the previous year. Despite Tesla claiming that automakers would not be keeping up with the stipulated demand, the company promised to increase its production volume and continue putting pressure on the chain.
“Everyone was worried about stockpiling. The time between production and delivery is decreasing, which is what Tesla said it would do”, Afirma Ben Kallo, analyst at Robert W. Baird. Musk's currently best-selling electric car models were the model 3 e or Y, representing 96% of sales recorded in the quarter.
Chinese expressiveness
On the other hand, BYG has gained a lot of “ground” under Tesla when it comes to the sale of fully electric vehicles. The Chinese leader almost doubled her delivery in one year, reaching the mark of 352.163 products sold. With a record of increasing 98% in total sales, now BYG wants to increase its global reach.
The company announced this Tuesday, 4, the opening of another factory in Brazil, which will be based in Bahia. Nonetheless, BYG is not the only electric car company to stand out in Chinese territory. Other brands had good results: the newcomer Lou Auto recorded a monthly record, delivering 32.575 vehicles. X Peng and Nio also had small increases.
Actions on the move
Despite being major market leaders, Both Tesla and BYG have been facing great competition. But, with sales records for this quarter, Tesla shares grew 6% in the American pre-market. Na Bolsa de Hong Kong, BYD showed a similar increase in 5%.
The electric car segment also benefited the shares of other market components. Contemporary EV battery suppliers Amperex Technology and LG Energy Solution also recorded important advances in their stock exchanges.
