New AI robots work to detect field diseases

AI technology (Artificial intelligence) is expanding its operating resources in rural and agricultural areas. “Theo”, a new robot that uses AI capabilities to eradicate field diseases, was launched by the company H2L Robotics in order to minimize losses in the segment.

High-tech robotics model operates in Europe to detect diseases in flowers. At the moment, experiments are taking place in the Netherlands, more precisely in tulip plantations, the symbolic flower of the country. Dozens of units are working in the fields to ensure healthier flowers for the summer, non-tourism high season period.

How the robot detects diseases?

With the machine, each plant undergoes an in-depth analysis using camera sensors located in front of it. The technology allows thousands of photographs to be taken of the planting for greater precision in analysis. I.e, the resources work as an advanced screening of the plantation, although, offering additional features.

Beyond monitoring, Theo also works to remove damaged flowers and diseased seedlings, if identified. This task is essential so that field diseases do not spread. The machine is also equipped with prior information about the characteristics of tulips.

The company H2L Robotics chose the name “Theo” as a way to pay homage to a farmer from the Dutch North Sea coast. At the moment, 45 model units are in activity. Nonetheless, the machine is still being sold at a very high price.

Not value of 185 thousand Euros, which corresponds to 1 million reais in the updated quote and without taxes, the value exceeds that of a luxury car. Furthermore, some experts claim that Theo's top speed is less than 1 km per hour, which would be a possible limitation.
